Large format, impressionistic figures and landscapes in oil defined my style for many years, but my 2012 move to New York City forced me to adjust to small apartment living and no affordable studio space.

Notwith-standing the work I created during my last several winters in Mexico—oil and watercolor paintings of local subjects and landscapes—I turned primarily to work on paper, especially watercolor and ink. That shift better suited my space restrictions. However, it intensified my need for freedom of movement and expression, directed me away from representational and intentional figuration and toward more intuitive, abstract and gestural expression.

As is evident even in my early large format oil paintings of botanicals, I have always gravitated to intense color. I now also emphasize simple form, dynamic movement, and exploration of the unique and variable characteristics of paint. That focus best exemplifies my artistic goals—nurturing my yearning for emotional, spiritual, communal experience and healing.
